With the world cup now over, with what I believe the best team winning, Spain, what lessons can we take from the losers and victors and the games of the tournament?
England's no show: Yes it was shocking how bad England performed, especially with us all knowing that we had the talent to be real contenders, any given Saturday you will see Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard playing quality football, putting in goal after goal into the back of the net. The truth is they threw it away, dreaming their whole life of one day playing on the big stage, only to not show up when the time come. Every day whatever the occasion the sport, the job you must show up giving your full effort and attention to the moment with no fear of the outcome, as fear will paralyze you. This could be an important phone call, a meeting or just your daily recruitment routine, you have two choices. 1. Focus on the negative possible outcome and sabotage yourself.2. Focus on the best outcome and naturally be on the top of your game.
Live with Passion: Passion for what you do, you need to love what you do, care about the service you provide and every facet of your business, look at Ghana, are they naturally the most gifted side? NO however they have bags of passion spurred on by the dream of not only a country but the African continent, they truly shocked the world with how they performed, raising their standards to what they hoped to be! Recruiters when you have faith in your company, your candidates and most importantly yourself, great things can happen and quite often do!
Shaolin Soccer: For those of you that watched the final you will know it got a bit messy with Holland taking on some very nasty tactics, and leaving their standards and morals behind, they were lucky not to be down to 9 men at half time, even had their tactics paid off it would not have been a victory, as the world would have totally condemned them, for bringing the game into disrepute. Always keep standards high, a quality effort, adhering to the process put in place to safe guard clients, candidates and you, will always return better results in the long run, what is the point of a short term gain, only to lose your reputation and the business in the future.
Vorssprung Durch Technik: Methodical and lethal, Germany showed that a well disciplined team, where everyone knows their part in the team and sticks to it, can create fantastic results, even from an inexperienced team. Germany played incredibly well, working the basics and moving the ball like a well oiled machine, if that team were recruiters the placements would keep dropping in just like their goals, because when you have very strong basics, they are the foundations from which your business is built, when all else fails stick to basics and work as a team.
Revolution: Lead from the front, France what a bloody shambles players threw off the team, players refusing to play, team arguments, whatever next I know the French like a good strike but at the World Cup? This is what happens when players or employees get above their station, you cannot have your team questioning your decisions and certainly not voting on them, whether on the field or in the office great performers can at times get delusions of grandeur this needs to be kept a tight handle on as success should be encouraged, but so should we try to install modesty as we ideally want humble workers that appreciate their good fortune. From experience one rogue employee can completely change the dynamic of an organisation, for the worse.
Bravo Espana! What a fantastic ambassador for International football and for their country. Spain proved that hard work, sticking together, playing the way they want returns results, are they the most prolific goal scorers? No but they certainly are the best football players in the world, and that's official. They played with passion, with morality, never giving up working diligently, patiently and persistently until the greatest prize in the world was theirs and theirs alone. If as recruiters we can apply ourselves daily with discipline, enthusiasm and optimism contracts will come, in short old school values, work hard, enjoy what you are doing and believe to succeed.
Remember this old saying,
"The secret of success is consistency of purpose" (Benjamin Disraeli)
